Ace Reporter Recap

Ah, it's so good to be back! Talk about getting through the long wait, yikes this was almost as bad as the winter break. Oh well, Supergirl is back and will be uninterrupted until the finale which includes SUPERMAN! So exciting, but enough about that, lets get into tonight's episode! Andrew Kreisberg has been quoted saying he wanted this episode to explore the ethics of journalism which is a big topic to tackle! On top of that, we would get a further glimpse into Lena Luthor's past as well as some fun times with Guardian and Winn. Here are the moments that stood out to us!

  1. Kara is a Bad Cook: So is Kara trying to become a good cook in the conventional way using ovens and stoves? We ask because if we remember right from season one, she is an amazing cook with Turkey just using her heat vision. Ha, either way, this is perfect adorkable Kara doing her thing! So sweet to see.
  2. Kara Snaps Back Snapper: Kara can't hold down her reporter instincts and she stands up for herself, and puts Snapper in his place when he tries to cut her off! We love moments when we can see Kara, not as Supergirl, stand up for herself!
  3. Kara Gets a Bomb to the Chest: YIKES! We all knew this was coming from the preview a month ago, but seeing it happen and this time with extra special effects was pretty dang jaw dropping! Whoever is controlling those nano-swarm robots has a lot of explaining to do. Of course, if you've been to our spoiler page you know who that is!
  4. Supergirl Freezes the Nano-Swarm: While it could be taken that Kara was listening in on Snapper's conversation with James to get a competitive edge, she proves, as she always does, that it's to look out for people. In this case, she saves Snapper with her freeze breath just in the nick of time!
  5. Kara and Mon-El Break Into Jack's Office: Some of our favorite memories of Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, were when Lois and Clark would get into trouble investigating a story and Clark would have to find a way to save them. This scene with Kara and Mon-El reminded us so much of those days! The two doing a little trouble for the greater good. It was funny, cute, fun and kept you on your toes!
  6. Kara Comes to Snapper For the Greater Good: Kara did what was right because she is Supergirl and needed to protect the aliens from Cadmus when she made her blog, but as Kara the journalist, she had to apologize to Snapper for going against him. He isn't a great mentor but she is learning from him which needed to be recognized. The scene was very well done even with a bit of humor on Snapper's part.
  7. Lena Chooses Supergirl: We have been wary of Lena's true intentions this entire season yet whenever she is tested, she proves to be on the side of the just. Given the choice between Supergirl or Jack (her love), she chose Supergirl who was, in this case, an innocent. Lena sacrificed Jack to save the Girl of Steel.
  8. Kara and Lena: This was amazing! We know that Katie has some amazing acting chops and seeing her get to stretch those acting muscles with Melissa had us loving the pair! The writers did a really good job with letting Lena recognize that she wasn't feeling anything and fearing what she would become when she did feel again! Just like Supergirl is to everyone, Kara offers herself to be a moral compass for Lena.
  9. James, Winn, and Lyra: These three are pretty funny and having the final scene with James and Winn was a good moment for Mehcad and Jeremy. We like seeing those two together. The things James said to Winn about brotherhood and Clark really had us feeling the realities of friendship.

Final wrap up! Kara gets her first byline and its beautiful! Snapper seemed like he had his feelings hurt that Kara went against him in the Alien article but she had to do that as Supergirl. As Kara, she needed to win Snapper back and the two's reconciliation was akin to a Cat and Kara moment! Very sweet! Last but not least, WHAT IS RHEA DOING!!!!!

I enjoyed the episode still and like the whole season it had blank spaces. Like, Why the DEO or the special unit department where Maggie works isn´t involved in the investigation? People died! I love Kara and Lena as friends and how Lena opens up with Kara. The subplot with Guardian was really unnecessary I hope they would focus more on the main plot so the episode would feel more complete.

Right now I'm beginning to believe that this is due to actor availability already. As a story teller I would want to delve more deeper into the matter about the assassination of the informant between Alex, J'onn, and Kara (not that Alex would be too worried if Kara's all right because she's invulnerable to explosions). This was a missed opportunity IMHO. There's so much time for deeper dialogue and discussion of the core plot for development and it's all wasted on useless and boring side plots.

One other thing I noticed was missing in this episode - Kara was in a car that was bombed. We should have seen a scene where she reports this back to Alex and J'onn at the DEO (who had nothing to do anyway according to the plot). It was unrealistic that the DEO did not become involved in this at that point. In the season 1 episode of "How does she do it" the DEO became involved when just a droid was following SuperGirl - J'onn stated "Someone's targeting one of my assets, I want to know who it is." Yet in this episode that same asset gets blown up and he doesn't become involved? This is Alex's baby sister and she doesn't become involved? Unreal.

I really enjoyed the ep but wish it got a much higher rating number. Saw on spoiler.tv it came in at 1.5/1.4. Did CW not advertise it enough? Really annoyed about that and the hateful trolls will come out in force now.

Did Mon El have to be forced into the ep? Kara could have taken Alex with her or Jonnz who could have shape shifted, given the 2 min they actually got. Did we need Lyra joining the gang which is looking more useless every ep?

I don't understand this comment. Mon-El wasn't forced - he was used instead of Alex or J'onnz. Why would it be better for J'onnz to shape shift into another character when she could just use Mon-El?

Looks like everybody is noticing the problems with Supergirl's season except for the showrunners and that's a problem that they need to correct for the third season, which they got early renewal so there should be no excuse for them.

That was a thoroughly enjoyable episode, welcome back Supergirl. Keep that up for the final 4 episodes of the season.

Really enjoyed the new Supergirl flying scene at the start and her rescue of Snapper by using her Freeze Breath was awesome. We even got some super-hearing again which I can't recall that superpower being used this season.

Kara and Snapper - I just love watching those 2 together, Melissa and Ian play off each other so well. Please Please Please EP's and writers keep Kara as a Reporter with Catco, I got a lot of enjoyment out of watching Melissa in that role tonight.

And thanks for a Kara and James scene @ Catco, really nice to see that again.

Also enjoyed Blake Neely's music with a couple of nice piano pieces.

I got a Margot Kidder as Lois Lane vibe from this episode, when Kara walked into Lena's office wearing the white skirt and blue shirt. I'm sure Margot wore a very similar combination in Superman the Movie, will have to get my DVD out and check it.

I'm happy for everyone here who are happy with tonight's episode. That said I didn't really feel thrilled at all. The episode felt like filler. The Guardian team felt like filler all throughout. There must be an issue with actor availability that the writers could not fully focus on the episode's core story, and Rhea, thus they brought in more of the Guardian side adventures.

I'm sorry but, like Kelly, count me in as being a unhappy camper. My personal perception is that the season has become a real mess.

Not saying this to support my personal thinking, but EW is also raising the "desperate need for focus" the final stretch, and the "distracting Guardian subplot" ew.com/recap/supergirl-season-2-episode-18/

IGN concurrs with the EW. The critics are all noticing it

Too many characters. It's becoming a problem, along with weak writing. I can't believe for a second there was no crime or emergency around for Supergirl especially when a couple of minutes later Guardian is taking down a criminal. Is Supergirl only catching aliens now? They have got to pare this cast down yet they have added McGrath ( even though I love the actress) as a regular for Season 3. If Wood and Fiaonna are added as well it's going to be overwhelming and the show will suffer.

Did Mon El have to be forced into the ep? Kara could have taken Alex with her or Jonnz who could have shape shifted, given the 2 min they actually got. Did we need Lyra joining the gang which is looking more useless every ep?

I do wonder if Rhea knows Kara and Lena are friends and so is Supergirl and is going to play that against Kara and turn Lena. I have a feeling poor Lena is going to be caught between Cadmus, Rhea and Supergirl and any choice she makes will see her hurt.

great episode.

- Like Snapper and Kara mending things, good to see her back to work again. Food carts arent her thing
- Wonder if this episode was the seed to lead Lena down that darkside. Will she resent supergirl now? and if so does that mean Kara can never tell her she is SG or risk their friendship
- "creepy journalism" ftw
- usually the A plot and B plot have a similar theme, I missed it this week
- Next weeks looks amazing

by the by, can we slightly alter the voting system for episodes. I feel like I am being mean when I vote in the middle when it isnt best ever, best of season etc. though if everyone else likes it and or its a PiTa to change its fine
