Episode Description:
SUPERGIRL LIVES — Kara is moved by the story of a missing woman named Izzy (guest star Harley Quinn Smith) and decides to investigate despite Snapper Carr’s order to leave it alone. Kara takes Mon-El with her to the last place Izzy was seen and the duo find themselves thrust through a portal to another planet, Slaver’s Moon, where the downtrodden are sold as slaves. The leader of the trafficking ring is none other than Roulette (guest star Dichen Lachman). To make matters worse, Slaver’s Moon has a red sun, which means Kara and Mon-El are stripped of their powers and stuck on the planet with no way home. Meanwhile, back on Earth, Alex blames herself for Kara’s disappearance, fearing she’s become too focused on her new relationship with Maggie and too complacent in watching out for her sister.

Hello supergirl lovers!
I could finally see the episode with subtitles, here are my thoughts on it.
- It was an entertaining episode, but not the best of the season.
- I loved Kara in this episode, she proved once again that you don't need superpowers in order to become a hero.
- I am very happy with mon-el's decision to finally become a superhero as Kara. I fully understand his position about not wanting to be a hero, but his attitude was already starting to exasperate me.
- I love Winn, his story in this episode was my favorite. Although I am enjoying the growing friendship between Alex and Winn, I miss the little moments of friendship between him and Kara.
- Kara and Mon-el talking about the planet they used to visit was very cute, I felt a real connection there.
- I like Sanvers, but their first scene, as Alex said, was very cliché. They are still cute.
- I didn’t like James's attitude, I wish someone would punch him in the face.
- " plus the glasses don’t help" Maggie is a smart girl.
- I missed J'onn.
- I expected more from Roulette.

The episode was quite good. Very much in the "comic book" style - in a good way. It had just a few minor issues for me.
Winn's genre savvy moments were hilarious. I especially liked at the beginning how he found himself deconstructing the whole "clothesline the bad guy with the car door" cliche: " He's getting up ... he has a gun ... Oh, crap!"
It seems like the bad guys are starting to pack military weapons in case Kara shows up. Bad for National City, but logical, given that we've seen her get "stunned" by explosives in the past if they're close enough or powerful enough.
Kara and Mon-el's exchanges are a hoot. "Let's not go towards the big murder castle." But our gal has the Chronic Hero Syndrome, whether she has her powers or not, and that's why we love her.
I hope with Mon-el going into the superhero biz that he'll still point out practical problems to her, whether she listens or not.
Alex leading a DEO strike team through an interstellar portal was extremely cool. Winn was right on point citing "Stargate".
The literal "power-up" Kara got that let her blast the attack drone saved the rescue scene for me. Otherwise, it would have just seemed too easy for the escapees to just run back through an unguarded portal. It would, however, have made more sense for the DEO agents to stay back and cover everyone on the Maldonian side of the gate. But I guess Alex and Kara are like Kirk and Spock; the stars have to do everything important.
As usual, Kara and Snapper's exchanges are gems. My wife pointed out to me that with her super hearing, Kara might have heard his "Atta girl, Danvers". Of course there's no way he'd ever admit to it.
I think his drill sargeant approach is just what Kara needs after Cat's effective, but kind of bipolar emotional mentoring technique of the past three years.
A couple of minor issues:
The writers need to have more faith in what the audience gathers from the narrative. It seems like every few episodes we see some undeveloped background character very awkwardly verbally express their gratitude/admiration for Supergirl, like the scene in the slave cell after she was zapped by the alien "cattle prods".
After a while it come off like that scene in Megamind where Metroman is giving his scmalzy speech and someone shouts "We love you, Metroman!" - and he replies "And I love you, too, random citizen!"
Yeah ... instead of that, why not just have the captives gather around and help her to stand up?
It's usually better to show; not tell.
Secondly, Alex is going to start losing her action girl cred if she keeps going kind of dingbat every time Kara is missing or in danger, or when she hits a bump in her love life.
I don't mind a little romantic giddiness, but family history or no, it's way past time for her to get some therapy and deal with her "big sister" issues.
Does the DEO have a shrink on retainer?
As long as they aren't named Strange, Crane or (Oh, God No!) Quinzel, she should be fine.

I agree with both evrafter and Kelly. Alex is a strong, powerful, intelligent woman. Wether she loves a man or woman is irrelevant. I expect that Alex's behavior reflects her personality. Let's not make her a "puppy dog."
Argo
Sexual orientation and the realization of such should not change the personality of someone, she has never been a giggly, silly acting person, so there is no reason that she should be acting that way within the evolution of her and Maggie's relationship. It was just weird...
Exactly. In fact, such actions tend to be associated with immaturity. And, I would in no WAY consider Alex Danvers an immature character in any shape or form. She's acting like she's a high schooler. And, again I say...if it takes someone else to make you happy, you need counseling or self reflection.
Let Alex have a moment. If its always like that I will agree its wrong but it was her first gay encounter so let her be happy for 5 minutes before we give her crap.
Not really giving her crap, I'm giving the writers crap....

In Kara's apartment, go for it....cry, laugh, giggle, be silly. In the middle of the DEO? hell no. That is game face time, and the other is put on the back burner until your day is done. It hits me the way that James making out in the middle of the main hallway with Lucy hit me.
Happy and keeping it reserved mode at work....YES. Happy and giggly at work? no...

- Love Mon-El. Chris Wood's comedic timing on par with Melissa and Chyler!!
- Please just stop with changing Alex. Agreed, Kelly...giggly Alex is just plain...weird. If you need someone else to truly make you happy, then THAT'S the real problem.
- Jeremy...applause. Good Winn episode.

It was just weird...She is a freaking commander within a covert para-military organization within our government. You don't go giggling around the office...

A good, but not great episode. You think Kara would have mentioned her trip to Earth 1 to Alex or Winn or somebody. As with most season 2 episodes so far, Kara seems to be using superstrength less and less and her heat vision more and more. I liked Win being freaked out after getting roughed up and then later summoning the courage to fight the alien.

Hmmm...eyebeams took out alien space warship. Quickly. Punch took out alien, when punch was not superpowered...her sister's training helped. The jewel thieves were slightly better equipped than the guys with pistols or a shotgun, for all the good it did. It appeared that the weapon did a significant amount of knockback, for those of you familiar with the Champions rules set. One might have suggested that she should instead have flown in front of the vehicle, landed, and explored the innards of the vehicle's crumple zone, as seen on a previous episode.

Rating: 9/10
Positives
Negatives
The negatives however could only pull off taking 1 point away from a 10, because I enjoyed the hell out of this episode so much.
Favorite Scene: Kara standing strong without powers in the cell.
Favorite Line: "Start the car...."
Favorite Character: Mon-El hands down this episode.
Positives
- The Kara/Mon-El chemistry is fantastic to watch, I loved every scene they were in together, and wanted more.
Loved Winn geeking out, so much fun to watch.
Snapper's little comment was awesome.
Absolutely LOVED Kara kicking butt, WITHOUT SUPER POWERS. That was one thing I was hoping for with this episode and it gave it to us in spades. Loved it.
The scene of Supergirl standing between the traffickers and the victims was just incredible, and it really showed just how different Kara is from James.
Negatives
- Guardian story line is really weighing the series down. I'm trying to be nice about the whole thing, and I hate slamming Mehcad, because personally I think he is a great actor. But, he is being wasted here, and his story line is simply not needed.
Did not like the competition on stories between Kara and James, it wasn't cute or funny, it was out of character for her, and a part of James character that I really don't like. The "look at me, and how awesome and heroic I am doing what police officers do every day and don't get stories written about them every time they make an arrest." Just don't like that story line.
Scene between James and Winn in the locker room, was both awesome and irritating. It was awesome in that it REALLY DID SHOW, just how obsessed, and egotistical James is when it comes to Guardian.
Giggly Alex was just weird...

Loved the episode . Kevin Smith did a good job and Melissa was great!
In addition to the Star Trek and Stargate references - did anyone else notice the "Superman Lives!" reference?
When they met the friendly alien on Slaver's moon they said he was eating "Thanagarian Snare beast". - this was the name Kevin Smith had used for the infamous Giant Spider creature in Kevin Smith's unproduced "Superman Lives!" script

OK, so who caught the references to two SciFi shows?
Winn mentions the "stargate" as soon as he sees the interdimensional portal; that was easy.
How about his reference to the "Red Shirts"?
Anybody familiar with "Star Trek the original series" will remember that almost every time a cast member dons a "Red Shirt", they get killed off. Apparently Winn saw that too!

It felt good to have the show back again and I thought that was excellent and thoroughly enjoyable episode, good work Kevin and will look forward now to what you bring us in Episode 17.
Highlights
- Melissa, totally awesome, she was magnificent in all the time Supergirl didn't have her powers with the hope, optimism and determination.
- Brilliant opening action sequence with Supergirl and Guardian.
- Snapper Carr, give me some more of him, all his scenes were a pleasure to watch.
- Roulette, didn't see enough of her but Dichen Lachman was excellent with the screen time she did have.
- Jeremy Jordan, bought his A game in this episode, superb all the way through.
and lastly
- Everything on Slavers Moon, the undoubted highlight of the episode for me, visually it looked great, the action sequences were excellent and as mentioned before we got our hopeful and optimistic Supergirl which is one of things I love about the character.
