Guys, with all due respect, I think the show needs to regain its soul. I look at Season 1'again and I see and feel something is missing. Yes, I do like some of the characters in this season, but messing with sisters night is a mistake. I think the loss of Calista Flockhart and Peter Facinelli hurt the show. They have been unable to replace them with an obvious similar calibre of actor. I think Chris Wood and Katie McGrath are excellent additions. It would be great if they could shmoose someone of Calista's calibre and join the show as a regular.

I am really enjoying the season, but I also find that I am rerunning as many episodes as I once did. I am, however, looking forward to the great Sterling Gates' two episodes. He is the master and I expect a lot of fun from him.

Hi guys. Sorry to repost this as one post as the main page only allows for limited word count and I really wanted to know what people thought in regards to certain things, I've just been quiet about this so far.

Just playing devil’s advocate on The Guardian.

My little nephew asked me a while ago,

“is it okay to steal stuff from the government as long as you do good stuff with it?” What can I say? Straight from the mouth of babes!

I’m really not being negative for no reason. I’m just bringing up some observations I haven’t personally seen discussed. Maybe it has, but I didn’t see it.

Since the Guardian Story started, the family dynamic has all but gone. Winn and Jimmy has shown no concern for Kara both times she’s been missing since their Vigilantism began. James has been waging a one sided private competition against Kara since the beginning. Now Winn is keeping classified information from the DEO and its Agents in order to one up Supergirl and show her how it’s done. Now I know some think this is cool, but I really don’t. I miss the FAMILY dynamic of them working together, which has not been happening for a while.

After watching the Flash last week, with the team coming together in their quiet but heartfelt support for Barry and Iris. I almost teared up at their closeness. And I realized how different the Supergirl dynamic has become since the Guardian storyline was introduced. All because the boys want to be the hero of the hour. But not heroes that support the superhero. I wasn’t expecting to consistently enjoy The Flash more than Supergirl, but the heart wants what it wants.

And I know Kara will get a lot of grief from various fractions of the fandom (not talking about this forum) as she didn’t jump to support them, but personally, I feel really badly for her. She’s always the first to apologize. the first to admit it when she’s wrong and always the last to know everyone’s secrets. I’m hoping she kept her trip and her gift from Cisco to herself as what she has is really dangerous in irresponsible hands.

Also, if Winn is saying ‘How high’ every time James says ‘Jump’, shouldn’t they at least be doing it NOT on the DEO work hours? He’s done this repeatedly. Isn’t Winn suppose to be looking out for the organization and it’s Agents by being actually at the monitor doing his job. Seriously, in any remotely real situation, he would be fired and charged with treason for taking classified info and tech from a govt. installation for personal use. (The Guardian suit, shield, gadgets and Scooby van uses advance alien tech and equipment from the DEO) I got that bit from my little tiny nephew!!!

I don’t necessarily object to him and James being the Guardian, but Winn should choose between his ACTUAL job and his Vigilante work. Doing both just endangers the Agents he is supposed to be watching out for. Will there be consequences? (I doubt it.)

Will there be consequences to James not doing his day job too? Cat spent day and night making sure that CatCo stayed on top. And James just needs to do it when he can fit it in his Vigilantism. Am I suppose to take away that a woman just isn’t as effective as a man at being a CEO. Should we see Catco being damaged from his neglect?

And unless I was watching a different show, didn’t Kara save their butts on their first night out and Winn ran out of tricks and James was about to get squished like a bug by the Parasite before Kara showed up with the Plutonium and blew him up to tiny pieces. She saved them again this episode, so would it kill them to say ‘Thank you’.

I don’t where this story is going, but if this fracture continues t/o the season, they need to just give ‘The Guardian’ their (James and Winn) own show with other DC b list characters for a spin off, kinda DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.

After this episode, I’d be happy to trade them for Eliza and Jeremiah permanently for a family show with The Danvers family and Martian Stepdad.

I don’t expect to see meaningful consequences from the writers, but sadly, I expect to see Kara telling W&J she is wrong and will they forgive her. I might note here that Winn made that suit with lead lining with purposeful deceit to keep Kara from seeing. Conversely, Winn was the very first person she told her secret to, almost the minute she became Supergirl. Is Kara hurt by that sentiment?

If these consequences would be address, then it could be a good story. But seeing some of the interviews from the actors, I doubt it.

And I just wish the writers would develop their recurring villains. After all ‘The Hero is only as good as the Villain?’ And Livewire, being obsessed by and created by Supergirl has huge potential.

I really love reading everyone’s comments and apologize in advance if I offend anyone. I’m just getting some stuff off my chest after remaining silent. Peace.

So I am seeing a lot of dislike to James' role this season as Guardian. First of all that is totally ok and it's good to share opinions. There are always going to be plot points that folks don't enjoy. But on that note I thought I would ask you guys a question. What would be a good storyline for James that you would enjoy? The character is well within canon and has had plenty of history with Supergirl. Is there a plot line you would enjoy seeing?

I did ask that question a while ago with a forum post but no one answered lol. I do believe Guardian is a direct result of trying to address what role does James actually have on this show except it backfired. Personally I reckon he should have just been a Caitlin/Cisco style friend, a mentor with some experience (not in being a superhero though, he has none of that) that gave occasional advice and backed Kara with his investigation skills. I reckon it went downhill when he was written to be a romantic interest.

"Why do boys think they can do the work of a female super hero"

Hoping you didn't mean that Mon-El and James are not as good as Kara based on that reason. They aren't as good as she is but surely not because of that. Otherwise you'd be tearing into Jonn and Superman too.

Ok, under the weather a little today but here it goes....

Positives:
1. One of the best written episodes thus far for me, Parrish is one of my fav writers from last season, and she did not disappoint in this episode.
2. Kara and Mon-El scenes once again, top notch, the nuances between these two actors is spectacular and fireworks worthy.
3. I also loved the scene between Kara and James. Even though I am not a fan of Guardian, I "almost" understood James, and then he fell right back into being the jealous, I'm hero no matter what you say guy once again. I know some think that was out of character for Kara, but not one time did she say that he wasn't or couldn't be a hero...she simply stated fact, he isn't like her, or Clark or Mon-El....that is fact. Some have compared him to Oliver (NOT EVEN CLOSE) 5 years of intense, all areas of combat, total mindset of a soldier training does not equal a Black Belt. Also, we forget that Kara watched her 3 friends jump off a freaking building, and she was only able to save 2. She knows their weaknesses better than they know themselves, she has seen them. James can say all day long that Guardian is who he is, yet not once OUT OF THE GUARDIAN suit has he proven that. Kara has proven it time and time again out of the Supergirl suit.
4. Loved the little scenes with Maggie and Alex, very comfortable scenes, and I loved them.
5. Also, loved the scenes with Jonn and MGann....I'm going to really like that storyline I think.

Negatives:
1. The biggest one was not Guardian, I KNOW......A GASP COMES FROM THE CROWD....LOL It was actually questions not answered. Who the heck was this doctor, where did he come from, how did he know about Livewire, and how did he come into contact with the 2 he created? That was out of nowhere.

2. James is just unlikable at the moment. I'm just about to like him again, and then he goes into "jealous boy" once again and well, the likability flies out the window.

9/10 for me this go around.

Fully agree, Argo. It's what I was trying to point out, too, in my review. It was one of my favs this season BECAUSE it's the one that felt closest to the spark of last year.

Another example of this... When kara partially stormed into Cat's Office last night, I literally said to myself, "Man! I miss the 'feeling' of last season!!" Remember in July/August when they kept getting asked, "How has the move to the CW changed the feeling of the show," they would all say not at all, it all still feels like it did before? Lies... Crack smoking... False. Lol

Argo, you were spot on! Go back to ANY of the episodes from last year... That special chemistry is almost gone now *enter sad face here* Yes.. There are some HUGE improvements now... But the special spark is dying. Last night, I was able to see some flickerings of season 1...and I had forgotten how good it felt to see it.

One thing I've REALLY struggled with as of late... All of the actors/actresses/staff EXCEPT Chyler have become QUITE vocal politically on their social media. Melissa even posted a pic holding a sign with a less than stellar message on it. Kiwi and I were talking about it, each of us posing the question "can you IMAGINE if she had held up that sign amongst that room of little girls and little girl scouts from last year?" Made me sad. And thinking about it, a huge part of last year's spark was the light heartedness of the cast... And the joy they seemed to be feeling of this little miracle of a show they had been given. And now...the cast just seems to be part of all the division in the world. They seem to have become emboldened in "preaching" their views. On election night Jeremy had even tweeted anger and belittled "small town America." I appreciated he tweeted an apology a few hours later... But man...saddened my little ticker.

I just keep reminding myself... People have opposing views. But...I truly believe... We are all inherently good inside...and I truly have to believe, we all just want a good life for ourselves and others... And that we need to just overlook one another's weaknesses and seek out the strength. Except terrorists and serial killers.... They all suck and are all dead inside.

So... Here's hoping they will be able to merge the great updates of the show with the spark of last season.

Oh... And for the love of all things holy... Alex... Please show concern for your father. And... Pretty sure Eliza would ACTUALLY be hounding the DEO, Alex, and Kara to be out there actively looking for Jeremiah and not showing more concern for her girls' love lives.

Oh and Brierrose, I think Alex didn't tell Kara James' secret because it was not her secret to tell; I think that if she had revealed it herself, it would have created more bad blood between James, Winn and her. Or, Alex may have decided that it would. I don't think it was her being purposely deceitful.

It would have been nice for them to discuss that, but I don't think there will be one.

Also, just to add to what I mentioned earlier; I don't want Kara to be the one who is supposed to "grow" in the guardian storyline. I think where she was coming from was not narrowmindedness or prejudice and she shouldn't have to apologise for being afraid.

Evrafter, hang in there... I think even the cast can have their ups and downs (everyone is human after all and could have their personal views), but am pretty sure they would bring their best/kindliest/friendliest selves to the show; they have been doing that so far.

The writers and show runners though... They do need to go and watch last season... and perhaps read a few forum posts.

And it is highly amusing that in her interviews, Melissa keeps talking about how the show and this season is about women supporting each other, but the show has essentially been split into three parts were you have Kara supporting Monel (and viceversa), Maggie supporting Alex and Alex finding love, and J'onn growing to accept White Martians (again not treated with enough depth in my opinion) with the help of M'gann.

Oh and the fourth thread of James learning to be a hero for some reason with Winn's support.

The only women supporting each other thing I can find is Kara supporting Alex with the coming out. Well, there is some Kara-Lena as well, but it doesn't feel the same since the major chunk of the season and the storylines is devoted to the other threads mentioned above. Everyone is basically existing in silos.

Note: I am so sorry for sounding so negative. It has just been building up I guess. And, I am sure most of you enjoy the show very much for other reasons or may be the same reasons that I have issues with. And, I am not trying to take away from that. I hope you will continue to enjoy the show.

But, well, I am kind of losing hope that the show will return to its season 1 essentials of strong friendships and familial relationships that held up the show

Hi SSAV, I enjoy reading your posts, you share some good insights.

Re your comment above, this has become quite noticeable, there must of been about 10+ members of this website make similar remarks this past week that the strong familial/friendship bond of Season 1 has been lost so far in Season 2. Not sure if will come back this season either as they're currently writing/shooting Episode 16. Maybe it will come back in Season 3.

I'm still enjoying the show though as I watch it predominately for the fantasy of Supergirl but like so many others am missing the family/close friendships that was such an enjoyable part of Season 1.

not sure what you guys are looking for? there have been plenty of danver sister moments and space family moments.

Lets walk through the season shall we! I assume you know episodes well. Lets walk backwards

episode 10: I think we got 1 of the sweetest space family moments ever, space dad is unsure what he is about to go through but is sure it will be an emotional journey so he asks his daughters to be there for him.
episode 9: Kara says to Alex "you found us" to which Alex replies "always!". When Alex is about to go through the portal J'onn to Alex " bring our girl home". when they exit the portal J'onn is right there to hug Kara.
episode 8: Thanksgiving scene had some very fun sister beats. Later after finding out her dad created medusa Kara needs a reassuring pep talk and J'onn is right there for her. Also could anyone else on the planet ground supergirl like Alex can?
episode 7: light on Melissa Benoist scenes in total as she was filming crossover stuff.
episode 6: not 1, not 2, but 3 amazing sister couch scenes. cameo from space dad rolling his eyes at a drunk kara unable to go check out the scene of the crime.
episode 5. not much space family here as it was the beginning of Alex's journey
episode 4. the girls get J'onn to talk about M'gann. J'onn preferred to keep it close to the chest but Kara threatened to super pout and who could hold that off
episode 3: J'onn and Alex sort of laughing at Kara for her nerding out over meeting the president.
episode 2 and 1 were both intentionally light on space family to showcase Kara was unintentionally ignoring Alex with being to engrossed with Clark.

There are 2 major differences this season so far.
1: it is no longer episodic, sure there is a plot to each episode (livewire, parasite etc) but the character arcs, the relationship arcs take place over several episodes.
2: No Cat Grant. without Cat there isnt as much Catco thus not as much Kara being Kara. The Catco time has been replaced by sanvers or guardian.

I see lots of people saying Kara has no story. Kara's story is simple; you see her original purpose was to look after, mentor and take care of Clark and she is now getting to fulfill that need with Mon-El who needs someone as patient and caring as Kara. besides that almost every story will cross her path at some point. Look at guardian, while not a fan of the choice of the guardian/james arc it has kept an otherwise useless character relevant. While the arc started off in a total different place it is now in Kara's lane.

I suggest paying less attention to shipper fan echo chambers and find places that will give more balanced reviews and then venture into the shipping lanes and have some fun.

Argo

THIS right here, Argo. Same. The first one I re-watched in a very long time was last week's. Other than last week and the two Superman episodes, I haven't re-watched any of them this season. I WILL maybe re-watch particular scenes. But....Last season I would watch the first airing, take an hour break, and then re-watch again that night.

Well, to answer folks question about what people are missing; speaking for myself... I don't know if any of you have seen the show "Charmed"?

I don't want a three-character focus of course as in Charmed. I'd rather Kara remains the centre of her story. It's wonderful to see her grow.

But, in that show, that relationship was centre stage. I meant that.

I know that she has been acting as a mentor to Monel; but a lot of it has been about Monel himself finding his way as a hero owing to his feelings for Kara. It's about the growth of Monel. How does that add to the journey of Supergirl except to tell her that she misread his mind and actions? I know mentor storylines have that--the person being mentored growing; but, when you add the romance, it doesn't seem that way. It seems to be yet another story of a guy finding their way to herodom because he met a girl. Kara does struggle initially about mentoring a fully grown human with different values, but we had less time on that and more on how Monel is crushing on Kara.

Where is the Supergirl story in that?

The moments I loved best this season, other than Alex-Kara talks, and Alex-J'onn or J'onn-Kara talks have been the moments when Kara uses her idealism to change something (rather than her powers); and those have been few and far between. (Also, there was that one growth moment when she realises her parents were not paragons of virtue).

And then there is the Kara side. Her being a reporter is used whenever they need something to add to the plot; not as an opportunity for character development. Being a reporter is not easy. Especially for a rookie like Kara. And, yet we get so little of her struggles there.

I don't mean sweet sisterly moments RsChick. Neither do I mean a co-dependent relationship where Alex has no life outside Kara. I meant a consistency that showed you that it is still there.

Consistency in storylines.. consistency in relationships; and coherency in terms of character and story development; for example, while it was nice to see Kara talk to Aurora that one time about her struggles with being a reporter (which they later shelved), it would have been nice to see Alex and Kara have a talk about that too; instead of just about their romantic interests of the time. They could have fun in the bar like that one time when camera movement or shots made us all feel like we are in a "what is that ride thing in English that twists and turns and goes up and down and makes our heads spin?".

And... James-Winn; again, I know most people didn't like this storyline. So, I don't want to harp on it. But, it is yet another storyline of a guy struggling to be a hero. And lots of screen space have been devoted to it.

As folks have said before: Kara has become reactive in her own show. Things are happening to everyone else; and at some moment or other, their stories cross her path and she reacts. Is that how it happens for a title character?

I am not saying those stories shouldn't happen. I am not saying Monel couldn't have a crush on Kara (and viceversa) that Alex cannot have her coming out storyline (it was so very well-acted and well-written if a bit crunchy in terms of timeline) or that J'onn shouldn't be struggling with M'gann. But, shouldn't there be some merger as well between the storylines and characters? Not an occasional crossing but some reason why these additional characters--M'gann and Maggie exist in this world in addition to being romantic interests/same-species companions. Some connection to Supergirl. With Maggie especially, we are not seeing this. She seems brought in just to be Alex's love interest rather than as a person who needs to be there in the show for some in story reason.

Of course, I am going by my experience with reading speculative fiction (fantasy) where a core set of characters set out and develop storylines through the course of several books. Their developing romance or having side-adventures typically doesn't affect the dynamic between them; something like Harry Potter (although, that is for kids :D ).

And in any case, just as us folks who think something from season 1 is missing, there are others who love this season. And, that is great! I am glad you guys enjoy it.

And, I don't want to keep on saying this since it is possibly upsetting some of you. So, I will stop.

I didn't mean to say I will stop watching the show or that I don't enjoy moments of it. I do. I love Melissa Benoist. And, I am pretty sure I'd keep watching the show for her. I also love Chyler Leigh (as I did in Grey's). And I like Jeremy and David a lot.

And of course, over and above all that, I love all of their characters. :)

Excellent thanks Kelly, I thought about posting the lyrics to that legendary David Bowie song in this thread but didn't think they really fit. I do keep singing that line 'We can be heroes, just for one day' whenever I read this episode title though.

While the Episode title is probably in reference to Mon-El becoming a Superhero I wonder if the EP's titled it as such as a tribute to David Bowie.
