certainly not my favorite episode.

- Livewire was fine, but I would have liked a bit more time for her instead of the knock offs. Though nice to see Jessi Graff get some time on screen. great quotable, "I love how little boys think they can be superheroes woman who is an actual superhero is here"

- Sanvers had small parts but cute. does Kara know Maggie knows?

- Might be the first episode of supergirl I really just didnt like Winn. Turned his back on Supergirl? for real?

- J'onn and M'gann was such a powerful and wonderful part of this episode, a true saving grace of the episode.

- Mon-El; I think Kara was a little harsh towards him. And considering she didnt explain what a phone was before getting him a job at catco I think I could but into she didnt explain things well to him except to listen to me. Which he did fail at so there is that....

- action was on point, some really good scenes.

- James; where do I begin. he is a guy that interviews well but his wordds dont match his actions or his attitude. They seriously had better not have Guardian save supergirls ass at some point to prove a point that he can be a hero too. I mean seriously they cant write that in, I mean she is f'n supergirl does she need a guy to save her?

As I give this a re-watch I might appreciate it more, but I felt this was the weakest episode of season 2.

Hi guys. Sorry to repost this as one post as the main page only allows for limited word count and I really wanted to know what people thought in regards to certain things, I've just been quiet about this so far.

Just playing devil’s advocate on The Guardian.

My little nephew asked me a while ago,

“is it okay to steal stuff from the government as long as you do good stuff with it?” What can I say? Straight from the mouth of babes!

I’m really not being negative for no reason. I’m just bringing up some observations I haven’t personally seen discussed. Maybe it has, but I didn’t see it.

Since the Guardian Story started, the family dynamic has all but gone. Winn and Jimmy has shown no concern for Kara both times she’s been missing since their Vigilantism began. James has been waging a one sided private competition against Kara since the beginning. Now Winn is keeping classified information from the DEO and its Agents in order to one up Supergirl and show her how it’s done. Now I know some think this is cool, but I really don’t. I miss the FAMILY dynamic of them working together, which has not been happening for a while.

After watching the Flash last week, with the team coming together in their quiet but heartfelt support for Barry and Iris. I almost teared up at their closeness. And I realized how different the Supergirl dynamic has become since the Guardian storyline was introduced. All because the boys want to be the hero of the hour. But not heroes that support the superhero. I wasn’t expecting to consistently enjoy The Flash more than Supergirl, but the heart wants what it wants.

And I know Kara will get a lot of grief from various fractions of the fandom (not talking about this forum) as she didn’t jump to support them, but personally, I feel really badly for her. She’s always the first to apologize. the first to admit it when she’s wrong and always the last to know everyone’s secrets. I’m hoping she kept her trip and her gift from Cisco to herself as what she has is really dangerous in irresponsible hands.

Also, if Winn is saying ‘How high’ every time James says ‘Jump’, shouldn’t they at least be doing it NOT on the DEO work hours? He’s done this repeatedly. Isn’t Winn suppose to be looking out for the organization and it’s Agents by being actually at the monitor doing his job. Seriously, in any remotely real situation, he would be fired and charged with treason for taking classified info and tech from a govt. installation for personal use. (The Guardian suit, shield, gadgets and Scooby van uses advance alien tech and equipment from the DEO) I got that bit from my little tiny nephew!!!

I don’t necessarily object to him and James being the Guardian, but Winn should choose between his ACTUAL job and his Vigilante work. Doing both just endangers the Agents he is supposed to be watching out for. Will there be consequences? (I doubt it.)

Will there be consequences to James not doing his day job too? Cat spent day and night making sure that CatCo stayed on top. And James just needs to do it when he can fit it in his Vigilantism. Am I suppose to take away that a woman just isn’t as effective as a man at being a CEO. Should we see Catco being damaged from his neglect?

And unless I was watching a different show, didn’t Kara save their butts on their first night out and Winn ran out of tricks and James was about to get squished like a bug by the Parasite before Kara showed up with the Plutonium and blew him up to tiny pieces. She saved them again this episode, so would it kill them to say ‘Thank you’.

I don’t where this story is going, but if this fracture continues t/o the season, they need to just give ‘The Guardian’ their (James and Winn) own show with other DC b list characters for a spin off, kinda DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.

After this episode, I’d be happy to trade them for Eliza and Jeremiah permanently for a family show with The Danvers family and Martian Stepdad.

I don’t expect to see meaningful consequences from the writers, but sadly, I expect to see Kara telling W&J she is wrong and will they forgive her. I might note here that Winn made that suit with lead lining with purposeful deceit to keep Kara from seeing. Conversely, Winn was the very first person she told her secret to, almost the minute she became Supergirl. Is Kara hurt by that sentiment?

If these consequences would be address, then it could be a good story. But seeing some of the interviews from the actors, I doubt it.

And I just wish the writers would develop their recurring villains. After all ‘The Hero is only as good as the Villain?’ And Livewire, being obsessed by and created by Supergirl has huge potential.

I really love reading everyone’s comments and apologize in advance if I offend anyone. I’m just getting some stuff off my chest after remaining silent. Peace.

So I am seeing a lot of dislike to James' role this season as Guardian. First of all that is totally ok and it's good to share opinions. There are always going to be plot points that folks don't enjoy. But on that note I thought I would ask you guys a question. What would be a good storyline for James that you would enjoy? The character is well within canon and has had plenty of history with Supergirl. Is there a plot line you would enjoy seeing?

They were absolutely right to make James 'The Guardian'. But they made him the wrong kind of Guardian.

I think a majority of people don't like the Guadian arc here and other places, is because there's an intuitive knowing that the story just doesn't 'feel' right. Because James, the character, has not EARNED his accolades, the way Kara had to. She made mistakes, ripped up a tanker, caused an oil spill, was reviled at one point. Kids threw their super girl costume in the trash. She had to win back the City's trust.

She gives of herself to protect even her enemies. She gave the ultimate sacrifice to save the entire planet without asking for anything back other than her friends go on and have a good life. She EARNED it.

James on the other hand gets handed a company. From being a photo journalist? An art editor? Who aren't typically writers. Kara probably know how CatCo was run by being Cat's assistants for 3 years. Not saying she should be mind you, not nearly.

He practically bullies Winn into helping him and they are instant Heroes. He keeps calling HIMSELF a hero, though he's a Vigilante. You could argue that Supergirl is too, a vigilante, but in her case, she is asked by the Police Dept to help. They've practically deputized her.

The Guardian is written to make no mistakes. Just Boom, the Guardian is a hero without a journey to becoming a hero. It just feels 'false' and the audience know this intuitively.

HOW JAMES could have worked, and worked very well? The writers were handed James' story on a plate back in season one. 'Human for a Day'. That episode should have been the beginning of his story. The photograph he loved so much that he had it framed for Kara? The moment he drew so much inspiration from, and easily Brooks' best work on the entire series. That moment ended in a really heartfelt scene between he Kara and shared something meaningful and private with her.

That moment when Kara became the truest hero without powers, is when James could have realized just how important being a HUMAN hero is, and how he, without powers could be a hero too. That doesn't mean getting into a costume. James could have been written as a man of quiet strength and wisdom, there to guide the young budding hero to something even greater than she she even knew. After all, hanging out with Clark all those years must have taught him some wisdom.

He should have been 'The Guardian', archetype in this story. In fact I thought he was, until he became only the love interest.

As for how James could have fit in as a useful guardian archetype character. He could be expanded his fighting skills 'on screen' like their 'rocky' scene from S1 with Kara. He could have trained with Kara to become a stronger fighter. He could have been her confidante and began writing articles, then in S2 he would have been well positioned to encourage Kara's path as an investigative reporter instead of this ridiculous CEO rubbish. They could have been partners in journalism. She of the pen, he with his camera. All the while watching her back, since Kara has a tendency to disregard her own safety. And above all, James could have been instrumental in helping Kara and Alex find Jeremiah and Cadmus. You know that non story, story. Does any one even care where the poor bloke is? And off course there would be conflict between on the way. Kara is a bit of a hothead.

All that would have fit in with where Cadmus left off from S1, made real use of James at CatCo and an instrumental part of the Hero's life and journey. And we would all love him for it. After all, every General should have his Marcus Aurelius. Or every Queen should have her Francis Walsingham. :)

That was likely a much longer answer than you expected. Sorry I got carried away!

I'm not dissing the show at all. I'm very supportive of it, and as comic book shows aren't normally my thing, it's a surprise to me that I like it. I followed Melissa here from Whiplash and Glee, and plan on supporting the show until the end. Even if I have to FF some of it :P Plus I really LOVE most of these actors.

Ok, under the weather a little today but here it goes....

Positives:
1. One of the best written episodes thus far for me, Parrish is one of my fav writers from last season, and she did not disappoint in this episode.
2. Kara and Mon-El scenes once again, top notch, the nuances between these two actors is spectacular and fireworks worthy.
3. I also loved the scene between Kara and James. Even though I am not a fan of Guardian, I "almost" understood James, and then he fell right back into being the jealous, I'm hero no matter what you say guy once again. I know some think that was out of character for Kara, but not one time did she say that he wasn't or couldn't be a hero...she simply stated fact, he isn't like her, or Clark or Mon-El....that is fact. Some have compared him to Oliver (NOT EVEN CLOSE) 5 years of intense, all areas of combat, total mindset of a soldier training does not equal a Black Belt. Also, we forget that Kara watched her 3 friends jump off a freaking building, and she was only able to save 2. She knows their weaknesses better than they know themselves, she has seen them. James can say all day long that Guardian is who he is, yet not once OUT OF THE GUARDIAN suit has he proven that. Kara has proven it time and time again out of the Supergirl suit.
4. Loved the little scenes with Maggie and Alex, very comfortable scenes, and I loved them.
5. Also, loved the scenes with Jonn and MGann....I'm going to really like that storyline I think.

Negatives:
1. The biggest one was not Guardian, I KNOW......A GASP COMES FROM THE CROWD....LOL It was actually questions not answered. Who the heck was this doctor, where did he come from, how did he know about Livewire, and how did he come into contact with the 2 he created? That was out of nowhere. It was a twist that I enjoyed, and certainly did not see coming.....but kinda random.

2. James is just unlikable at the moment. I'm just about to like him again, and then he goes into "jealous boy" once again and well, the likability flies out the window.

9/10 for me this go around.

with his camera as a photographer he could have helped her learn the ropes of being an investigative reporter, they could get into trouble together here and there.

Precisely my friend! As opposed to this faux Arrow Mk.II minus 5 years in hell and League training.

to be 100% fair, if they wrote him a lot more humble in it all I could get behind guardian, but he has been so smug and selfish from the start of it. People lie because they know deep down what they are doing is wrong. When James was speaking with Kara in the catco office, did he seem like someone humbly asking for understanding or someone looking to rub her face in the idea? Then when the topic of Mon-El came up he backed off? why?

at the end of it Kara was the fandom in this episode. to quote a new twitter friend,
1. How the heck is James a superhero/he's gonna get himself killed
2. Why was everyone lying to her about Guardian
3. She knows Mon El doesn't have inborn heroics
4. She says that he can change
5. She knew Mon El's real motives.

Also from Leslie:
1. Where's the girl power
2. Why do boys think they can do the work of a female super hero

J’onn should have put Winn on probation, people could have gotten hurt because Winn kept important information from the DEO. I find it interesting that J’onn didn’t try to make Winn stop helping James.
Kara is basically more alone than she ever has been since she became Supergirl.

Brierrose,

Good observation. That's exactly the feeling I came away with in the episode. All the more reason I really appreciated Mon el coming to her and coming clean with his feelings for her. And her eyes like 'Comets' and if it was the last thing he saw, he'd be okay with it. How can you not love that. I'll have to rewatch just that scene.

Agreed. That would have been a good move by the writers. Put Winn on Probation. Add some stakes to the game.

But yeah, I just came from this episode feeling a keen sense of isolation for Kara. I'm obviously too invested in this character.

I really need some J'onn, Kara and Alex time next week.

Agree with you on that Ink Slinger, Kara,James and Winn working together at Catco was a special part of Season 1 for me and it wasn't too nice to see their fractured friendship at the end of this episode, hopefully they can be all close friends again.

2 out of 2 to start the 2nd part of the season for me, this episode was worth a second viewing almost immediately after the first, I got quite a lot out of it.

Highlights
- The acting pairs were quite excellent in this episode, thoroughly enjoyed the scenes between David and Chyler, David and Sharon, Melissa and Mehcad, Melissa and Brit, Melissa and Chris.
- Kudos to the Encore VFX team, some more awesome scenes on Mars and the Livewire electricity effects are totally stunning.
- Blake Neely's music was particularly good in this episode especially for the scenes in prison.
- Brit Morgan, she must love playing this role as she brings a top-notch performance each time, fantastic work Brit, happy that we will most likely see her again.

Bring on the Martians next week.

One of the best episodes of the the season for me due to the fact it felt more like Supergirl from last season--Scooby gang being all back together, Alex and Hank one-on-one interaction, James and Kara.

The writing was smooooth.

Mon-El just....fits. And, I'm still loving not totally knowing Kara's feelings. My bet, she has feelings, but feels inner conflict--thinking she can't have it all. Remember what she told Hank last season, "I wasn't sent here to fall in love (with a human), have children...."

I just LOVE how Alex KNOWS her sister so well. In fact, it even felt like Chyler knowing Melissa.

The visuals were spot on. The training session with Mon-El? Great with Kara's mid air spin and Mon-El's leap. Looked legit.

And, really liked the interplay between Kara and Livewire. Felt like good character/story development.

But other than all that, everything Fedguy wrote sums it up for me for the season, "Comparing Supergirl to the Flash raised an interesting point. Supergirl is my favourite show on TV right now for many good reasons, but if I was to be rational, The Flash is likely narratively structured better at least so far.

Supergirl has too many arcs for difference characters and devotes too much time to them compared to the other shows. Not necessarily a bad thing but when one of those arcs is as unenjoyable as Guardian it has an impact on the fun of each episode.

James feels like he has equal weight to Kara this Season, which shouldn't be right. The show isn't called Supergirl and Guardian. The Flash's support team understands enough that each should help to their capacity. Cisco and Caitlin are definitely heroes, but they don't suit up fighting crime in the streets. Before Wally got powers, he expressed his heroism in an appropriate capacity, driving his car to help Barry and others. Never once has he received the delusion to ask for a suit from Cisco and fight villains in secret.

Meanwhile, amidst Alex deciding to hang with Maggie, give up, hang with Maggie, give up (Sanvers has been pretty good so far but at times it's distracting), Jame's childish stunts and newer constantly generated social conflicts between the previously cohesive Team Supergirl, some of the most important aspects of the season, namely the fact that CADMUS has Jeremiah, has been sidelined. While The Flash is racing to stop Savitar from killing Iris, Arrow attempts to investigate Prometheus, the Legends defend time and find the Spear of Destiny, I can't find a way to finish this sentence with a description of what Supergirl is doing. It seems to be a constant stream of villains of the week."

I almost forgot about a moment in the episode that made me laugh and facepalm:

Towards the end of the episode when Kara's asking Winn and James if they could go back to being superfriends, and James tells her something like he "doesn't just want to be the guy at the office anymore". Winn's reasoning, though, of why he didn't want to go back to just being Superfriends was thus:

Winn: "Ya, I don't wanna just be stuck behind a computer."

Ummm....Winn, you do know that's literally what you do as part of Team Guardian, right? You sit. Behind. A computer! *facepalm*

I was particularly bummed he decided to side with James. I always mostly liked Winn.

Oh! I'd like to add that, as many in tumblr pointed out, Kara saying that "she doesn't have to work alone" but has "Mon El" to help her and support her was out of character.

She has DEO and Alex and J'onn. Did she forget that? They have always been her backup. She has rarely been alone in her fights.

But, well, I am kind of losing hope that the show will return to its season 1 essentials of strong friendships and familial relationships that held up the show

Hi SSAV, I enjoy reading your posts, you share some good insights.

Re your comment above, this has become quite noticeable, there must of been about 10+ members of this website make similar remarks this past week that the strong familial/friendship bond of Season 1 has been lost so far in Season 2. Not sure if will come back this season either as they're currently writing/shooting Episode 16. Maybe it will come back in Season 3.

I'm still enjoying the show though as I watch it predominately for the fantasy of Supergirl but like so many others am missing the family/close friendships that was such an enjoyable part of Season 1.

not sure what you guys are looking for? there have been plenty of danver sister moments and space family moments.

Lets walk through the season shall we! I assume you know episodes well. Lets walk backwards

episode 10: I think we got 1 of the sweetest space family moments ever, space dad is unsure what he is about to go through but is sure it will be an emotional journey so he asks his daughters to be there for him.
episode 9: Kara says to Alex "you found us" to which Alex replies "always!". When Alex is about to go through the portal J'onn to Alex " bring our girl home". when they exit the portal J'onn is right there to hug Kara.
episode 8: Thanksgiving scene had some very fun sister beats. Later after finding out her dad created medusa Kara needs a reassuring pep talk and J'onn is right there for her. Also could anyone else on the planet ground supergirl like Alex can?
episode 7: light on Melissa Benoist scenes in total as she was filming crossover stuff.
episode 6: not 1, not 2, but 3 amazing sister couch scenes. cameo from space dad rolling his eyes at a drunk kara unable to go check out the scene of the crime.
episode 5. not much space family here as it was the beginning of Alex's journey
episode 4. the girls get J'onn to talk about M'gann. J'onn preferred to keep it close to the chest but Kara threatened to super pout and who could hold that off
episode 3: J'onn and Alex sort of laughing at Kara for her nerding out over meeting the president.
episode 2 and 1 were both intentionally light on space family to showcase Kara was unintentionally ignoring Alex with being to engrossed with Clark.

There are 2 major differences this season so far.
1: it is no longer episodic, sure there is a plot to each episode (livewire, parasite etc) but the character arcs, the relationship arcs take place over several episodes.
2: No Cat Grant. without Cat there isnt as much Catco thus not as much Kara being Kara. The Catco time has been replaced by sanvers or guardian.

I see lots of people saying Kara has no story. Kara's story is simple; you see her original purpose was to look after, mentor and take care of Clark and she is now getting to fulfill that need with Mon-El who needs someone as patient and caring as Kara. besides that almost every story will cross her path at some point. Look at guardian, while not a fan of the choice of the guardian/james arc it has kept an otherwise useless character relevant. While the arc started off in a total different place it is now in Kara's lane.

I suggest paying less attention to shipper fan echo chambers and find places that will give more balanced reviews and then venture into the shipping lanes and have some fun.

Well, to answer folks question about what people are missing; speaking for myself... I don't know if any of you have seen the show "Charmed"?

I don't want a three-character focus of course as in Charmed. I'd rather Kara remains the centre of her story. It's wonderful to see her grow.

But, in that show, that relationship was centre stage. I meant that.

I know that she has been acting as a mentor to Monel; but a lot of it has been about Monel himself finding his way as a hero owing to his feelings for Kara. It's about the growth of Monel. How does that add to the journey of Supergirl except to tell her that she misread his mind and actions? I know mentor storylines have that--the person being mentored growing; but, when you add the romance, it doesn't seem that way. It seems to be yet another story of a guy finding their way to herodom because he met a girl. Kara does struggle initially about mentoring a fully grown human with different values, but we had less time on that and more on how Monel is crushing on Kara.

Where is the Supergirl story in that?

The moments I loved best this season, other than Alex-Kara talks, and Alex-J'onn or J'onn-Kara talks have been the moments when Kara uses her idealism to change something (rather than her powers); and those have been few and far between. (Also, there was that one growth moment when she realises her parents were not paragons of virtue).

And then there is the Kara side. Her being a reporter is used whenever they need something to add to the plot; not as an opportunity for character development. Being a reporter is not easy. Especially for a rookie like Kara. And, yet we get so little of her struggles there.

I don't mean sweet sisterly moments RsChick. Neither do I mean a co-dependent relationship where Alex has no life outside Kara. I meant a consistency that showed you that it is still there.

Consistency in storylines.. consistency in relationships; and coherency in terms of character and story development; for example, while it was nice to see Kara talk to Aurora that one time about her struggles with being a reporter (which they later shelved), it would have been nice to see Alex and Kara have a talk about that too; instead of just about their romantic interests of the time. They could have fun in the bar like that one time when camera movement or shots made us all feel like we are in a "what is that ride thing in English that twists and turns and goes up and down and makes our heads spin?".

And... James-Winn; again, I know most people didn't like this storyline. So, I don't want to harp on it. But, it is yet another storyline of a guy struggling to be a hero. And lots of screen space have been devoted to it.

As folks have said before: Kara has become reactive in her own show. Things are happening to everyone else; and at some moment or other, their stories cross her path and she reacts. Is that how it happens for a title character?

I am not saying those stories shouldn't happen. I am not saying Monel couldn't have a crush on Kara (and viceversa) that Alex cannot have her coming out storyline (it was so very well-acted and well-written if a bit crunchy in terms of timeline) or that J'onn shouldn't be struggling with M'gann. But, shouldn't there be some merger as well between the storylines and characters? Not an occasional crossing but some reason why these additional characters--M'gann and Maggie exist in this world in addition to being romantic interests/same-species companions. Some connection to Supergirl. With Maggie especially, we are not seeing this. She seems brought in just to be Alex's love interest rather than as a person who needs to be there in the show for some in story reason.

Of course, I am going by my experience with reading speculative fiction (fantasy) where a core set of characters set out and develop storylines through the course of several books. Their developing romance or having side-adventures typically doesn't affect the dynamic between them; something like Harry Potter (although, that is for kids :D ).

And in any case, just as us folks who think something from season 1 is missing, there are others who love this season. And, that is great! I am glad you guys enjoy it.

And, I don't want to keep on saying this since it is possibly upsetting some of you. So, I will stop.

I didn't mean to say I will stop watching the show or that I don't enjoy moments of it. I do. I love Melissa Benoist. And, I am pretty sure I'd keep watching the show for her. I also love Chyler Leigh (as I did in Grey's). And I like Jeremy and David a lot.

And of course, over and above all that, I love all of their characters. :)
